September 2023
September 2023 was the month New York City began enforcing its short-term rental registration law, and Gothamist reported that Airbnb had switched many unregistered listings there to long-term stays. Four days earlier, S&P Dow Jones Indices had named Airbnb to the S&P 500. Around them the trade tightened: Evolve was laying off a fifth of its staff, Vrbo announced fees for US hosts who cancel, Scotland's parliament kept its licensing deadline, and Victoria announced a levy on short stays.
